Bio Poems

Poetry can take many forms and there are various structures that we can use to pen our poems.  Bio Poems are written about a person and are often a personal description of the poet themselves. There are several Bio Poem structures and at the end of the day, a free form poem about yourself could be a Bio Poem too.   If you are looking for the specifics of Bio Poetry and how to write Bio Poems, I recommend the following links.

How to make a Cat Cuddle Buddy in 11 easy steps

On the holidays, I made Shelly a cuddle buddy.  The intention was to have a red and black one that would match the new décor in the living room.  That was the plan when I ordered a black and red cat tree too.  Sometimes life doesn't work out the way we plan.  The black and red décor in the living room isn't quite there yet, but the cuddle buddy is.  Check it out.

There are lots of tutorials around the blogosphere and on those lovely "How to" websites.  I found some of them really confusing!  Some of the steps weren't really clear on what had to be done while others seemed to make it way too complicated.  I prefer to sort of go with the flow when it comes to crafting so I looked at quite a few cushions, soft cat toys and tutorials online to get a general idea of how to make one then I adapted those ideas to suit me.  I had a few false starts, but it all worked out okay in the end.
Here is the method I used.  I would recommend you read all the steps before deciding if you want to try this at home.  No one was harmed in this production of this cuddle buddy or blog post.

Cat Cuddle Buddy

Materials I used: red cotton pillow case, small sheet of black felt, 1m of black ribbon, scissors, needle and black cotton, chalk/pen, sharpie,  wadding or cushion stuffing.

Step 1: Use a sharpie or chalk pen to draw a cat outline on the pillowcase.  You could print a template using clipart or other outline drawing found on the internet.  I did it free hand.

Step 2: Cut out the cat shape by following the outline with the scissors.

Step 3: Match up the two pieces of fabric you now have and start sewing.  A simple running stitch works, or you can use a blanket stitch if you want it to be a bit of a feature as well.  I didn't.

Step 4: Start on one side of the cat and sew around the shape, leaving a space big enough for three fingers to fit inside.

Step 5: Turn the fabric inside out and start stuffing with wadding.

Step 6: Throw some dried catnip in between the wadding too.  That will make it an extra cool, much loved cuddle toy.  I used the Kong Naturals Premium Catnip which I bought at my local pet shop.

Step 7: When you are happy with the thickness, sew the rest of the way around the cat shape so the hole is completely closed.

Step 8: Draw a cat face onto the fabric (although you could do this earlier in the process if you are confident enough to know you won't end up sewing over the face.  LOL.

Step 9: Cut a length of ribbon (about 30-40 cm) and fold it in half.  Sew the folded end of the ribbon to one side of the cat near the bottom to make a tail.  Tie the ends of the ribbon together using a simple knot.  Twist the ribbon around your finger and tie a knot a few cm along the ribbon.  Repeat this two more times so you have 4 knots spread along the length of the tail.

Step 10: Cut two small triangle shapes out of felt and sew them at the top of the head to make ears.

Step 11: Cut another length of ribbon and tie it around the neck of the cat shape to make a collar.

As you can see, I think it turned out pretty well and Shelly enjoys snuggling with it at nap time.

If you decide to make something like this, I would love to see pictures (in the comments).  If you are inspired to do something even better, I would love to see that too!

Happy Purring!

Tips for Perfect Pet Photos

You may have noticed I like to capture the memories.  I like to take photos of Shelly, playing, sleeping, looking at me like I'm silly, eating and even ignoring me.

I find it a bit frustrating when she poses for the perfect picture and by the time my camera clicks, she has moved!!  I'm not getting a new phone so I can get a faster camera.  I'm sure there is probably some way I can change the settings so that the camera I have works faster.  In the meantime, I have found a way to get Shelly to focus, so my camera has time to focus too.

All you need is one of these...

That's right. all you need is a pipe cleaner!!!
Bend and twist it into any shape you like as long as you give it a 'tail' that can tuck into your phone cover.  Then, tuck it into your phone cover.  Simples!

Show your kitty the new attachment to your phone then start snapping.  Here are some photos I took of Shelly, using this awesome little fluffy wire.

Have you ever seen a more beautiful kitty?
There are lots of listicles offering tips for great pet photography.  Many of these articles include the almost 'common sense' info.  Here are some ideas that I have picked up from my reading and experience.
I couldn't possibly have planned this photo!
1. Be ready, always!
You never know when your little treasure will do something cute.  Be prepared.
2. Have Fun!
If you have some time and want to take a few photos for something specific (e.g. I made a calendar for Nanny last year with photos of Shelly for each month) get out the treats and the toys and have some fun.

As you can see, some of the best pics were impromptu
and included Shelly's toys!

The treats feature too sometimes!

3. Relax.
If you are relaxed, your kitty or puppy or bird or goldfish will be relaxed too.  That's the best way to get a great photo.  By the way, this is true for photographing humans too.

4.  Tidy up.
Have a nice clean space that has nothing you will notice later and not want in your pictures.  Some really great pictures of Shelly have been ruined by the pile of laundry in the background.

5. Try different angles and shot types.
The extreme close up may really bug your pet.  I know there are times when Shelly doesn't want me in her face.  Lots of photographers will tell you to get down on 'their' level.  If your pet is on the floor, you get on the floor too and take photos from the same height.  But some of the best pics I have seen are from unusual angles.   I have photos from Shelly's level, from under, above and beside her.  Don't worry if it isn't the 'recommended' shot type or angle that you are 'supposed' to get.  Take it anyway.  You might be surprised with the results.

6. Edit
Use an online or phone application to edit your photos.  Crop, change colouring, reduce red eye, blur edges, do the lot.  Have fun with it too.

So there are my tips.  Have fun!!

Shelly the Succinct

MeowM,
I refer you to a question from your recent letter.

"Weren't we lucky that the BFF took us to the vet?"

No.

Love Shelly

My Reply

Dear Shelly,

Grandma and Grandpa are on a long holiday.  They are driving south to visit the family.  They haven't been sent to the vet.  I didn't take them to the 'farm' for their retirement.  They left of their own accord and they will be back soon enough.

Yes, they do bug me sometimes, but I agree that they can be entertaining most of the time.  G&G also pay the mortgage so we should probably be thankful that they let us live here.

By the way, I open the door for the children when they come to visit, because if I didn't, they would climb over the fence and break the windows.  I joke.
They are family.  We open the door for family.  Like when I open the back door for you to go on one of your outside adventures.

That guy, won't be around much from now on.  He has decided he would rather spend some time unattached to anyone for a while.  This means that I'm all yours for the moment.  There's no reason to be jealous!

Weren't we lucky that the BFF took us to the vet today?  I have to say that your nails are much better now.  They were starting to get so long that you wouldn't have been able to walk.  Quite frankly, you looked a bit like an... (whispers) outdoor cat.  There, I said it.  You are my precious pet and so much better than your outdoor neighbours.  You deserve to be taken care of by experts.  I love you so much.

Shelly, my lovely girl, you were so good at the vet today that I'm going to give you tuna for dinner tonight.  Aren't you lucky?

I sometimes wonder what you are thinking when you look at me like that.  Oh a yawn.  Am I boring you, my darling?

I can understand that you miss Grandma and Grandpa because I miss them too. You must find it rather boring when I'm off at work and you are home by yourself.  I'm so glad that you haven't been destructive like the other kitties that I see on the internet.  I don't want to show you the pictures... in case you get any ideas.

Hang in there, my Shelly bean, G&G will be home in a little more than two weeks.  Before long, you will be writing to ask me how long we have to wait for their next expedition.  Enjoy the quiet, my fluffy friend.  Don't forget, that while G&G are away you have unfettered access to their bedroom and no one chasing you off the bed.  Not to mention the fact that no one is relocating you with cuddles.  You poor dear.  Grandpa loves you.

Meanwhile, I could use a snuggle with you.  I have a headache from all that nasty school work I had to do this afternoon.

Hark, what's that I hear?  You are meowing.  Must be time for dinner.

I will have to crack open the tuna.  I'm coming...

Meow, Meow,
Love MeowM

A Letter from Shelly

Dear Mum,
Where are Grandma and Grandpa?
They were here and they left... like usual... although the house was really really tidy... I don't think I've ever seen it this tidy.  You came home.

They have been gone for days and days... I know Grandpa goes away for days and days sometimes.  I miss him and I'm really rather annoyed when he comes home and wants us to act like he never left.  I have a long memory.  I know he leaves without saying goodbye.

Mum, they have been gone for over a week!!  You are not the easiest human to live with, you know, it is nice to have a different human to play with sometimes. I keep picking up on the scent of other people... Aunty the BFF and that GUY that you seem to snuggle with a lot... they've been here.  There was an invasion of children.  Again! Why do you even open the door for them? But, Grandma and Grandpa still haven't come home.

What's with that??

GASP!! OMGGM... MUM?
Did Grandma and Grandpa get sent to the Vet??
Did they get .... (whispers) put to sleep?  Gasp!

I know they bugged you, Mum.  Everyone knows that I didn't appreciate the way Grandpa relocates me (with a cuddle) - talk about inconvenient.  But we had them trained fairly well.  They know how much food I like to eat and they can open the door.  They were pretty good value the last couple of months when you were off with that GUY.  They can be entertaining when they try to play with me.  I miss Grandpa!!

I miss Grandpa and I even miss Grandma and her squawking.  She is really loud, but it has been way too quiet lately.

When are they coming home, Mum?  When?

Love Shelly

Hagrid's Sentence

Hello Everyone,
Hagrid here.

I am blogging for M today because she flew to Sydney with HIM.  No doubt she will want to tell us all about it when she gets home on Sunday night.  Can't wait (if I could roll my eyes, I would).

M insisted I use a writing prompt for my "Sentence a Day" contribution; probably because she is worried that I might tell you what I really think of HIM.

The prompt comes from Toasted Cheese: Comment on this quote from CS Lewis "Always winter, never Christmas"

My Sentence: I think Mr Lewis lived in Antarctica.

Tomorrow our special guest blogger will be Shelly.
That's that then.

Greatness From Shelly

Dear Human Mum,

Thanks for all the toys, you get me from the shop,
But, my favourite toy is a clear and plastic bottle top.

I'm glad that I can call you "Meouwm" and you brought me to live in your house. Your bed is really comfortable.  The brown leather-look cube that sits in the corner is a great place to perch or flop on. The box with the cushion that you put in the wardrobe is okay, but I prefer to sleep in higher places. Under your bed is a great place to hide and that blanket with the puppies that drapes over your chair, is warm and soft. It's not only great for curling up on at night, but the way it hangs down makes it a perfect hiding place!  I can crawl under your chair and hide behind the quilt without you even knowing.  Your house is great!!

It isn't just the furniture and the boxes and the suit cases and the clothes that you let me play with - it's like a kitty cat playground - but you do an excellent job of looking after me.  I can go poops in a litter tray in the house and play outside.  Sometimes, I get so hungry that I think my tummy is going to shrivel up into a raisin, but you are getting better at feeding me before that happens.  It isn't that hard you know, Meowm - my hungry song is loud and long and ends with a nip or two.  I know you're only a human, but surely that isn't too hard to decipher.

I do love you Meowm! You're soft and squishy and get excited by the cutest things.  I mean, it's a piece of string for goodness sake.  But if that keeps you occupied and stops you from wanting to pick me up and carry me around the house like a teddy bear, I can handle that.  I can play along with that game.  But the ribbons... you can give me ribbons whenever you like!!!
Anyway, it's time to go outside and roll in the grass before bed time.
Love ya Meowm!
Tag, you're it.

A Great Video- Apparently

Hello - Hagrid here.

M reckons that this is the greatest video ever.  I am not so sure myself.  It's a video of Shelly playing with a ping pong ball in a washing basket.  M has been doing a great job of boring everyone with it. You guys are no exception.  I have tried to hold her off as long as I could.

I don't get it either.
Have a great week and don't forget to hug your teddy bear!

May I say, that I was just hanging out in the laundry basket when M chucked the ping pong ball in with me. She is a bit of a nut, you know.  I was merely defending myself.  I might add that M did not ask for my permission to record my play time in the privacy of my own home.  Once it's on the internet it will never go away, therefore I must simply accept that you are humans and you lot will insist on invading the privacy of the adorable.  Hagrid might not understand why M finds me so entertaining, but at least there aren't any embarrassing videos of him on any blog sites.  I will take solace in the fact that AGT has a tiny following and this shouldn't hurt my chances of becoming famous for something dignified - like juggling.

When M's away, we will Partay!

M’s having a nap; Shelly and I are having a partay!!
While M’s away the kitty will play.  We have been having a blast browsing on the internet… and catching up with all of Shelly’s kitty friends.  As you can see…

M said I could blog as long as I showed everyone a Shelly favourite.  The toy I’m going to show you today is actually one of my favourites too.  I don’t play with it, I just watch M and Shelly play with it and find the whole performance rather entertaining.  It intrigues me to watch Shelly playing with what must be one of her most loved toys and having such a marvellous time.  She is mesmerised by this handmade toy (M made it) and, to be honest, she goes a little nutty for it.  Have you even seen a cat hide behind furniture, dive under coffee tables, dance around in circles, run through people’s legs then freeze like a statue before pouncing on… a PIECE OF STRING?!
I have, and I will tell you it is hilarious.

Actually, the first time it is hilarious, but after that it is kind of peculiar.  It is especially perplexing when one realises that Shelly must know that it is simply a piece of string.  Shelly is rather bright so she must have figured out that M is just dangling it in front of her, flicking it around, hanging it from door handles, or just holding it and twitching every now and then.  Sometimes she drags it behind her as she races through the house with Shelly in hot pursuit.  Sometimes, she’s  just carrying it from one room to another when Shelly begins stalking her and attacks the string when M has finally dropped it in the toy box.  I love Shelly very much.  I wouldn’t let just anyone walk all over me like she does (literally), but she can be a tad eccentric at times.  I just don’t get it!  I realise M made it for her and they love each other and stuff.  I get that Shelly is still really a kitten.  But, it’s a piece of string.  Is she serious?

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot.  M said I had to tell you that she used two types of wool.  One was a multi-coloured knitting wool and the other was a plain tanned wool.  She just tied a bunch of strands together and plaited them before tying it up with another piece of string.  She plaited the coloured one first then the tanned one.  It was as ‘simple’ as tying the two plaited pieces together and that was that.

M calls it “the tail” because she thinks that when it is lying on the floor and gets pulled around a corner the tanned plait end looks like a lion’s tail twitching as the lion sleeps.  I think I’m starting to see why Shelly and M get on so well.

Seriously people…. It’s a piece of string.

The Rellies are Round: Hagrid Update

Hi Y'all
Hagrid here.

I just wanted to let you all know that my cousins are back in town.  One or two Aunts and Uncles tagged along as well.  This makes life a little more hectic than usual.  In between consoling cuddles for M (it's term 4 and she's a bit of a mess), playing with Shelly and keeping the kids in line, catching up with the Rellies (distant relatives, in case you were wondering) is a challenge.

We managed to squeeze in a quick "Hello" visit this morning and M stopped crying long enough to take a lovely photo of the rascals who had all just jumped into a box.  They were still fighting over who got to be on top when M said she wasn't waiting any longer and snapped this pic.

One thing I have learned since living with M...

It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from, a day with the relatives will always be noisy!

Love and Hugs
Hagrid
