My DIY Prayer Retreat- Part 2

Last time, I told you about my DIY Prayer Retreat.

It was so good. I also promised to share with you a few of the insights I had during my retreat.

1. I love listening to Praise and Worship Music. Why don't I listen to it more?!  Therefore, I will listen to my Christian Music playlists when I craft and during my quiet time - maybe not everyday, but so much more than before.

2. Memorising Scripture really changes my mindset and it helps me to focus on God's love. Therefore, I am going to start using my scripture memorisation app again. Why did I stop? If you want to learn more about this app, click here.

3. I need to give myself more opportunities to both be still and move.  Not at the same time.  LOL. I also need to do some mindful breathing from time to time, because breathing is important and focusing on my breath is like a little reset button. I always wanted one of those.

I hope you have found these posts about Prayer Retreats helpful and you can use them to design your own. Of course, it would be wonderful to go to a retreat that is designed and lead by someone else, but we have to be practical about these things. Sometimes in some seasons of our life (often when it's most important to take time to retreat) a weekend away is not feasible. You can do it yourself.  I did.

Until next time

My DIY Prayer Retreat- Reflection

I had such grand plans for my school holidays in June. I was going to spend time with various friends, learn how to play lawn bowls, watch netflix, go on a wellness retreat, start a new exercise regime, make lots of cards, declutter my wardrobe and study, do my taxes, cook freezer meals for the new school term and read a novel. OMGGM.  Grand plans!

When I caught a bad cold three weeks before my holiday and was still feeling awful a week before the holidays, my plans changed!

The first week, was spent in bed, mostly.  I slept during the day! I watched netflix.  That's about it.  I did manage to go to the specialist.

Then, the BFF asked me to house/cat sit for her and I had a brilliant idea. There was no way I could do all the things. Staying at the BFF's, on my own, was a good opportunity to have a DIY Prayer Retreat. I had seen some blog posts about DIY retreats. I was seriously excited as I prepared and it did not disappoint. The best article I read was this one from Arabah Joy. I recommend reading it and thinking using the ideas from there to plan your own retreat.

You could also check out this Pinteret board with some of the articles and quotes that I used during my retreat.

You might be wondering what I planned for the retreat...

The Plan

8:30 am Worship and Reflection - listen to worship music- craft

9:00 am Quiet worship music, read psalms and call to worship. Then journalling setting up an intention.

10:00 am Reading Bible Study/ Devotional

10:30 am Reflection and Journaling-

11:00 am Gratitude Journalling- crafting

12 noon Lunch

12:30 pm Confession and Continued reading

1:00 pm Journalling

1:30pm Praying for others- make cards (?)

2:00pm Music and Reflection Journalling.

This is how it actually turned out.

9 am (I started late, but that's okay): worship music, prayer asking God to guide me and journalling

11am Gratitude Journalling- Read praise and worship Psalms (played worship music during this time too).

12 noon Lunch

12:30pm Reading Articles about grace, body image, diet and nutrition and note taking about these.

1:00pm Journalling- prayer

1:30pm Writing a list of people I wanted to pray for and prayer.

2:00pm Reflective Journalling- planning for future reading, small steps for the future (next retreat, daily to do's in light of reading and prayer).

Will I do it again?

Absolutely.

Also, I came to a few conclusions while I was 'retreating' and I will tell you more about that next time.

If you get the opportunity, a few hours or even just one, being still in God's presence and digging deep into His word is so worth it. Do it! Whenever you can.

Until Next Time, God Bless You.

AGT 2020

Hey Everyone,
AGT will be a different place this year, so I wanted to let you in on the plan.

I will be posting here fortnightly, that's every two weeks, on different topics. As I am starting a new job this year, I will be really busy, so I am hoping you can all forgive me for fewer posts this year.  Check out what we are planning to cover this year.

Craft and making cards will continue to be part of the rotation, of course.

I will keep you updated on how I'm going with my 2020 goals, as I have in recent years. Keeping you in the loop really helps me to stay on track, so thanks everyone! I also love this habit tracking app.

We will celebrate some special events like Aunties' Day, Mothers' Day, Harry Potter's Birthday and of course, MY Birthday! There will probably be a few other fun things to celebrate too.

I'm going to share some games and activities that you can play with children and young people.  Click here if you are interested in my past posts about Bible based activities for children.

We're bringing back the Best of AGT, so stay tuned to relive some of the best posts from the last 10 years.. That's right.... I started AGT near the end of 2010, can you believe it?!  Let me know about your favourite posts in the comments!

I'm looking forward to the fun we are going to have this year.

Peace at Christmas

I promised to share some Peace with you this week. While this year, we have already celebrated Christmas, I feel like this part of the Advent series is too important to be skipped.  Peace has certainly been an important word for me this year, so let's do this.

The final candle in the Advent Wreath is Peace.  Christmas is the time we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Angels announced the arrival of Jesus and they spoke of Peace on Earth.  While Peace is a word that can mean so much, the Biblical meaning of Peace is different.  Peace is not about a quiet afternoon reading or the absence of war.  It has nothing to do with a lack of people or crisis.  Peace is about a reconciliation between God and His children; an end to the discord between the sin of people and God.  Peace is a result of God's Perfect Love for us.  This video from The Bible Project explains it so well.

Shalom, My Friends!

Joy and Love at Christmas

I'm running very behind.  The last few weeks have been crazy! Today we will cover two of the Advent "candles" or themes.

Love

The theme of Love lights the "Bethlehem" candle. This candle is also known as the "Faith" candle, and refers to the prophecy of Micah, who foretold the arrival of a baby, born in Bethlehem.  The baby, Jesus, was placed in a manger. The stark differences between the Son of God and a trough for animal feed, highlights just how far He was willing to 'fall' in order to rescue His children (that's us).

Christmas is a new beginning, brought by love.  The love that God has for His creation.  The love that came from Heaven to Earth.  The love that brought a deity to become human.  Jesus fulfilled a prophecy, recorded hundreds of years before, because He loved us.  God still loves us; despite the rejection of Jesus and the commercialisation of Christmas and Easter.  The world seems to be in quite a mess these days (a mess we made ourselves) and yet, He Loves Us.  Therefore, show love to others at Christmas and everyday of the year.

Joy

The Joy of Christmas is something we all seem to be a little confused about.  This theme encapsulates all the excitement and rejoicing of the Shepherds.  These boys would have known about the prophecy of Isiah and Micah, they knew that a Saviour was coming to rescue them. Their parents, their priests, their grandparents, uncles, aunties and cousins were all waiting for the coming of a King.  Now, watching their flocks, an angel appears to them and brings them the most glorious news.  A baby has been born in Bethlehem.  Oh, the Joy!  The overwhelming, heart bursting, face glowing Joy that only comes from an encounter with God.  The shepherds went to Bethlehem and found the baby.  They worshipped Him and they went to tell everyone they met.  They had true Joy.

Christmas is a time when many seem to think they have to be happy and they will try anything and everything to find it.  They go to parties with people they don't like, buy things they don't need, decorate their houses, they sing songs and they dress up.  They play at being happy then feel more exhausted and empty than they did in November.  The true Joy of Christmas comes from a real relationship with Jesus. It certainly doesn't come from a shop and it can't be found at a party.

Stop putting so much pressure on yourself to 'enjoy' the Christmas season. Instead, find the real joy of the Season in the true story of Jesus.

Next week: Peace and JESUS!

While there is LIFE there is HOPE

Welcome to the first in my Advent series for this year.  It might seem a bit late, but it's never too late. I will start with a brief explanation of Advent, but the main purpose of this series is to share my reflections on each of the Advent themes as I participate in Advent traditions.

What is Advent Anyway?

Many people only think Advent is a December Calendar with a chocolate or gift for every day leading to Christmas. While it's true that there is a commercial version of Advent, the real root of this indulgence comes from a tradition which dates back to the 4th Century church.  It was four weeks of  daily Bible reading and reflection during the weeks before Christmas.  Ironically, Advent was first considered to be a time of fasting prior to Christmas day, which allowed Christians to be more focused on spiritual matters during the season.  Advent comes from the Latin word, adventus which means "arrival".  So, the Advent season begins four Sunday's before Christmas. This year, that was the 1st of December.  This is the time when we get ready, we prepare for the arrival of Jesus.  We prepare for celebrating Christmas. Click here to learn more abou the origin of the Advent calendar and click here to learn more about Christian origin of Advent.

The Advent Wreath

During the Advent season, there is a lovely wreath displayed in the church, with 5 candles.  Four of the candles each represent a particular theme which is the focus for each week: Hope, Love, Joy and Peach.  The fifth candle represents Jesus, The light of the world, who came to Earth at Christmas.  If you want to learn more about the Advent Wreath and symbolism of each candle check out this Learn Religion page and this Crosswalk.com page.

Week One: HOPE

We began this week by reading about the prophecy of the coming of Jesus. Isaiah wrote about the birth of Jesus literally hundreds of years before it happened.  He wrote about a virgin giving both to a son and the impact this little baby would have on the world.  At first, this prophecy was considered to be a bit of a joke, but by the time of Mary and Joseph (Jesus' parents) were engaged, the Jewish people were waiting for a King to come and rescue them. They believed that God was going to send a saviour and they lived in hope for the day when the Messiah would arrive.

As a 21st Century Christian I know the rest of the story.  I know how it all turned out and what Jesus did.  It certainly wasn't what the Jews were expecting.  I know that Jesus is coming again and I can live in hope for that day.  I also know that my God works in ways that are mysterious to the human mind and my expectations are nothing compared to His mighty power. I live in Hope that Jesus will come in my life time and put an end to the darkness in this world.  I have Hope beyond rational understanding that God created me and the stars in the sky, loves me, has a plan for my best life and a future for His people.  Hope in Jesus really does anchor my soul because my circumstances don't matter, the power of God does.  He is in control and I can trust Him.

I'm getting ready for Jesus to come.  I'm making room in my heart.  I can't wait.  Do you understand why Christmas really is the best?! If you want to learn more about the Hope I am talking about, please feel free to ask any questions in the comments.  I will do my best to reply promptly. What do you do with all those cards?

If you're a card maker, this question is inevitable.  The most obvious answer is, send them to friends and family.  Of course, most of us make cards for specific people. Any sort of special event is a reason to make a card.  Any time someone needs a bit of encouragement, I like to send them a card.  Most of the time, my cards are made specifically for an event or situation, like these cards.

Make Cards for (and Give it to) Someone Special

Special Birthday Shaker Card

I made this card for my Aunty who loves the colour Purple!

I used a stitched rectangle die set to make the frames on this card and I stamped and die cut my own shaker elements. Stamps (with matching dies) are available at Catherine Pooler Designs.

Swiped Sympathy Card

This card was made for a work colleague.
She sadly, lost her mother a few months ago.

This card uses a stamp set from Catherine Pooler and a swipe stamping technique that I learned from Jennifer McGuire.  It came together quite quickly and I was very happy with how it came out, despite the sad reason I had for making it.  I don't often make sympathy cards this way.  I prefer to keep a set of sympathy cards made up, which makes it a little easier to make them, but I didn't have any and I wanted to make this just for her. I love this design.  The swipe stamping is a great way to get a different look from those solid stamps.

Fathers' Day Card

My Mum asked me to make a card for my grandfather for Fathers' Day this year.  As he is visually impaired, I tried to keep my card simple with a stacked sentiment and different textures. The Blue Stone drops from Nuvo were perfect for this card, although I need lots more practice at squeezing them out.
Patterned Paper is from a packet of leftover scraps given to me by a friend.

Made to Order Selling

Sometimes, a friend will ask me to make a card for them for a special occasion such as a birthday or wedding.  They often insist on paying me something, which is nice.  I usually use the money I am given to purchase more craft supplies!  Check out these cards.

Wedding

A wedding card that a friend commissioned as they are going to family wedding.

Birthday

A pretty birthday card I made by order using some perfect pearls and products from a range of companies.

Selling in a Stall

While lots of people sell their handmade projects online using platforms such as Etsy, many choose to sell their papercrafts in market stalls.  When my church held a Car Boot Sale as an outreach fundraising event, I thought I might try my hand at selling.  I knew I couldn't make enough cards to fill a stall, not in the time frame I had, so I asked my friends to join me.  One of my friends makes the cutest hair bows and has successfully sold many of these at various markets.  The BFF paints with watercolours and ink.  She creates beautiful pictures and does hand lettering. I love everything she creates and I have run out of room on my walls because I love to display her work.  The three of us put together a "handmade haven" at the car boot sale and we all managed to sell enough product to cover the cost of our stall space and have some money to spend on new supplies.  Happy Face!
The small display of my cards at the Car Boot sale.

It was so much fun doing this together and we are exploring the idea of working together at markets in the future.  Excited Much! When I prepared for selling these cards,  I decided to make sets of cards as well as having a few one of a kind cards available.  Check out these sets of cards.

Keeping them on Hand

I also make cards just because it's fun and I keep them on hand.  My mum, some of my friends, my Nan and my sister all ask me for cards.  They love to 'go shopping' for cards in my Card Stash and usually they find something they like.  If they like something about a card, but it's not quite right, I can usually make another one with changes to make it just right.  Sometimes, I gather a selection of my handmade cards and give them as a gift set.  Each set would include a few birthday, thank you, sympathy, encouragement and congratulations cards.  I don't give these to everyone but there are some friends who like to send out cards and they love having their own stash of handmade cards to choose from.

That's that then.
What do you do with all the cards you make?

Pause IRL- (living the word)

I have been living my "One Word Resolution" for almost 3 months.  Admittedly, practicing the PAUSE has certainly helped, I'm not sure that it's making the impact that I hoped it would.  Perhaps, I need to be more patient with myself.

The One World movement is all about choosing a word that will guide everything you do.  Your everyday actions should begin to change and this will impact every area of your life.  I have to admit: there are some days, when I forget to Pause and I make choices that I later regret. The important thing in all this, is that I am not giving up.  I have paused to reflect, but I haven't stopped.  That's vital when you are trying to make lasting changes.  No one is perfect, so you have to give yourself a break.

Here are some ways that I am living my one word... PAUSE

1. Reading God's Word everyday

Removing myself from the "world" and spending real time reading the Bible is just one way that I Pause.  Reading the Bible and applying it to current situations or making connections to my past experiences helps me to learn so much.  I used to struggle with daily Bible reading.  Now this habit is finally developed, the time I spend reading my Bible is really making an impact on my attitude, my actions, my choices, my words and my relationships.

2. Meditating and Real Rest

The chronic pain in my neck and back gets a bit much for me and the best way to 'reset' (sort of) is to lie down.  That's right, laying flat on my back, right where I am.  There was a time when I would take meetings on the floor, call parents and answer questions from my colleagues, there were even times when I would talk to students while I was lying on the floor.  Now, I don't do that.  I lie down in the middle of the day if I need to, but I don't talk to anyone.  I just lie there.  No phone calls, no games, no work, no reading.  I just lie down.  Giving my spine and surrounding muscles a rest is important but so is giving my mind a rest.  My work is not just hard on my body, it can be even harder on my mind and mental health.

3. Meal Planning/ Grocery Shopping/ Meal Prep

I have been meal planning before I go grocery shopping and prepping meals ahead of time.  On the days when I am not working, I cook in bulk.  Last week, I made three different chicken dishes and served them out into containers so I could freeze them.  When I take the time to PAUSE and plan my meals, it makes it so much easier to make good choices about food.  I plan meals and shop when I'm satisfied (not hungry) and I have time to carefully think about how balanced my diet is panning out to be.  I don't have to stick to it religiously, but it makes those choices so much easier.

4.  Breathe First

Conversations are the most difficult activities for me, especially when it comes to pausing.  The pace is sometimes I little too quick for me to keep up which means that I sometimes say things without thinking.  While having conversations this year, my "pause" strategy is simple.  I just have to breathe before I speak.  Once I have taken a breath, if it really needs to be said, I can say it.  Often, if it didn't need to be said, the conversation has moved on anyway. I don't do this all the time. Maybe I need to do it more.  Maybe,  I don't.

That's that...
for now.

A Great App: You Version Bible App

The You Version Bible App actually changed my life.  It really did.

Before this app, I had several Bibles (usually gathering dust) on my shelves.  I bought devotional books that I struggled to complete.  My medical condition, of chronic pain, affects my neck, back, arms and wrists.  That means it's hard to hold a traditional Bible.  It's hard for me to carry a Bible to church.  We won't even start to talk about the way my chronic pain makes it difficult for me to develop and maintain good habits.    I wasn't interacting with God's word meaningfully or regularly.  I tried, I really tried, I was just unsuccessful.

I downloaded the You Version Bible App from Google Play Store and started using it.  Eventually, I found myself reading the Bible everyday and engaging in it like never before.  There are several features this App offers that make exploring my Bible and learning more about God so easy.

1. Versions

This app has capacity for you to download one of many Bible versions, including the Old King James all the way to The Message and Good News.  You don't have to download all the versions, you can access any of the listed versions with Internet access.  Viewing a range of versions is really easy too.  After looking up a scripture you can read it in any of the available versions, but tapping on a drop down menu and then tapping on the version you want. You can do this as many times as you like and you don't have to look up the scripture each time. It just finds it for you.  I LOVE this feature!

2. Verse of the Day

Everyday when you open the You Version Bible App, a verse of the day appears with references.  You can also share the verse on various social media sites with a choice of background images.  I know my cousin often shares the verse of the day on her Facebook page.

3. Bible Habit Tracker

This App tracks how many days in a row that you have opened the Bible App.  This was really helpful for me when I was trying to develop my habit to become daily. The App notifies you when you've had a perfect week and month.  You can view this information in the form of a graph or table.

4. Reminder

Using this app, you can set reminders on your phone, so you don't forget to read your Bible.  I don't need this feature anymore, but I think it's a great option for when you are starting the habit.

5. Bible Reading Plans

The You Version Bible App has hundreds of Bible Reading Plans ranging from 3 days to 365 days. Plans are organised by topic with a search option. Most plans include commentary as well as automatic look up of the referenced scripture verses.  It means that, regardless of how sore and tired I am, I only have to hold my phone and tap through the steps of the plan for the day.  I can also read the verses in different versions to help me understand the verses.  I don't need two or three or more books and I don't have to spend time looking for chapter and verse.

I am also really loving the option to 'read with friends'.  I can invite friends to read with me and there is a 'chat' feature at the end of each day within the plan so each group member can comment about the day's reading. We can summarise the scriptures, ask questions, apply principles to personal situations and share our own thoughts on the scriptures covered.

This App is awesome. It has some great tools and functions.  I don't even use the app to it's full capacity and I'm loving it.  I use this app every single day.

What do you use that helps you to maintain a daily Bible reading habit? Please share it with us in the comments.

Bless You!

Almost the End of the Year

Wow, the last week went quickly.
Visiting relatives, attending church, volunteering, more church services, wrapping gifts, cleaning, Christmas Eve traditions, the BFF's Birthday and Christmas celebrations, opening gifts and family fun have kept me busy! I almost forgot to write and post today.

I've really been enjoying hanging out at home with my mum.  Don't tell her that.

Our Christmas Day was wonderful. I woke up early, (thanks to Shelly) and went for a walk around the neighbourhood. It was nice to be outside and have a chat with God as I walked along.  I to the end of my street and smiled as I heard children calling out to their parents, or squealing with delight as they opened their presents. I also did a lap of the park.  It was quiet there. When I got home, I woke up my Mum so we could have breakfast together and exchange gifts.  Then we got dressed and headed off to church.  It was so nice to see my Church family and worship together with them on Christmas day.  There were several years when I didn't get the chance to do that and I really appreciate it when I can.  Mum and I had lunch at the local Football club, which was delicious.  We drove along the beach and then spent the afternoon watching Christmas movies and playing board games.  We both managed to fit in a nap too. It was low key and absolutely perfect for me.

While there are a few things I would have liked to do, I did everything I needed to do.

Today, we will have a "Christmas Lunch" gathering at my sister's house and exchange gifts with my nieces and nephews.  I am excited to spend the day with them, eating, playing games and just enjoying each other.  That's what family gatherings should be about, in my opinion.

What are you doing during this crazy week between Christmas and New Year? Working? Sleeping? Reflecting? Planning? Looking for a Calendar? Let me know in the comments.

Merry Everything

November Goals Check-in

Today we have lots of reasons to celebrate!

During my vacation in September, I worked hard at cutting out foods that I don't need and don't really want (but often eat for emotional reasons). I cleaned up my eating.
These foods include:
chocolate,
ice cream
iced bun loaf
cake (I don't even like cake, why do I eat it?)
cheesecake! (I love cheesecake)

I only drink tea and water. I drink a lot of water.  I eat 3 meals a day and any snacks are fruit or an occasional cracker biscuit.  When it comes to meals, I attempt to keep it to vegetables, salad, red or white meat, some bread and (because I can't live without it) cheese.

In five weeks, I have lost 4kgs.  I am over the moon!  I know that it's a bit faster than what can be maintained, but I feel like I'm really making lifestyle changes that will last.
In addition to changing my food choices, I have been exercising 5 days a week!  I'm still doing it, too!  Good for me! I finally came up with a plan that is realistic and therefore, achievable and I'm sticking with it!

Last time we checked in with my goals I told you that I felt like I have turned a corner and some sort of switch has been flicked inside me.  There are a few events/ activities and a few resources I used that found the switch and got me to the corner.  However, I still needed to take the step and flick the switch. It amazes me how some words or a single event can affect so much change.

Let me tell you what happened.

I did some reading.  Sounds simple.  I read my Bible and I completed a couple of Bible reading plans about weight loss.  One of them was the 7 Cycles to Biblical Weight Loss (available here) and the other one was on a blog.  They helped me to put "eating" and my perspectives on food into a different context.  I have had been on a long journey with weight loss, dieting, not dieting, healthy eating and self esteem linked to body image.  For a huge chunk of that journey, I did not even consider that these issues belong to God.  My body belongs to God and it's my job to care for it.

I had often remembered the Bible verse about the Christian's body as a temple of God when I talked about my choice not to smoke, drink alcohol or use recreational drugs.  I never thought about that verse in the context of food.  This shift in my mind and my heart, has results in a new way of thinking about my body.  This new way of thinking about my body has changed how I eat and how I think about food.

The women who contribute to these blogs explain it very well and I don't want to try and go deeper into it and mess it up.  Please check these links below.

Equipping Godly Women
Grace Filled Plate

I will probably talk more about my eating and my new perspective in the future.  However, for now I'm going to leave it at this.

I haven't lost 30kg (again), had surgery, changed religion, started an extreme workout or an eating regime and I didn't go to a fat farm or counselling.  I am just thinking differently about my body, food, eating, exercising and my health.  That's all I'm saying.

Until Next Week....

Why I'm Joyful

Earlier this month, I was asked to speak at my church on the topic of Reasons to be Joyful and why a particular verse encourages me to be Joyful.  Below, is a transcript of what I said (almost).  You might know some of this story if you have read my blog for a long time.  It might fill in some gaps for you too.  Here goes...
There are some things you need to know about me…

1.     I have a medical condition which causes chronic pain.  I experience physical pain every day.  (I’ll tell you more about that in a minute).

2.     I have clinical depression.

3.     I am a learning support teacher in a high school.  I work with students who struggle to perform academically in school (for various reasons).

How’s it going, am I sounding joyful yet?

I know it’s easy to be joyful when things are going great.  Today I’m going to talk about being joyful when things are tough.

Here’s my story.  I grew up the Salvation Army and my family has always been an active part of our church.  In my late teens, I began getting headaches (everyday).  I spent a lot of time going to doctors, physios and specialists.  I tried lots of alternative medicines and treatments.  The doctors eventually put it down to a combination of issues and put me on some medication which helped but it didn’t really solve the problem.

In my teen years and my early twenties, I was an active member of my local corps.  I played in the band, I was the timbrel leader, I was a SAGALA leader and a youth group leader.  I was at university and later at work during the day.  Most nights I was at church or doing something at home that was for a church activity.  My worship was in my service.  I was joyful and busy.

In my mid-twenties (about 10 years later), symptoms began to spread and I started experiencing pain in my joints and my neck.  After lots more doctors and tests and about 3 or 4 years of failed attempts to fix it, the medical profession got its act together.  They worked out that I have a disorder which means that my brain perceives pain differently to ‘normal’ brains.    The long and the short of it is that everyday activities can cause me debilitating pain.  We soon learned that my Dad had a similar condition, although the cause of his pain was clear (cancer and diabetes), while the cause of my condition wasn’t.  I was unable to work for some time.  I found that many activities I had once enjoyed were now practically impossible.  This condition has no cure and it often leads to depression.  Of course, I was no exception… I had some very dark days, weeks, months.  Treatment is focused on helping those with chronic pain accept their illness and focus on having some quality of life.

This was a struggle for me and I was confronted with making choices between what I wanted and what was best for my health.  Playing the drums or playing the cornet caused me to be in bed for two days – or worse struggle with work and take pain medication that made me dopey.  Playing my timbrel meant wearing a wrist brace and taking strong pain medication to be able to write my name the next day (which was hard as a teacher). Sometimes even eating with a knife and fork was exhausting. Having a shower meant that I needed to lie down for an hour afterwards.  There are still times when I over do things and I need to limit the time I spend doing things.  I’m in a much better place now.  I have a wonderful team of medical professionals who work together to help me balance medication, specific and modified exercises, going to work and having a life.  It still need to avoid some things but, in general I’m okay.

I had to learn how to live my life differently.  I have spent a lot of time with doctors, nurses, physios I read lots of books, pamphlets, websites and journals to learn about my illness.  I spent a lot of time with my Bible to learn about healing and why God doesn’t heal everyone.  I learned where I could get some of that peace that passes understanding.   I didn’t know it, but all that time I spent learning how to live with my illness was preparing me for the most important thing I’ve done in my life.

Most of you knew my Dad.  Most of you know that he was promoted to Glory (he passed away) in January 2017 after a long battle with cancer.  The cancer was caused by kidney/liver disease which was caused by diabetes.  I had the privilege of living with Mum and Dad in the last few years of Dad’s life and caring for him alongside my Mum.  All the time I had spent with doctors, all the reading I had done, all the medication I had taken and learned about, all the dark days and all the strategies for managing my pain and my life, became priceless knowledge and experience.  I was comfortable to speak with Dad’s doctors, nurses and other health care professionals.  I was not afraid to ask questions, because I had learned how to do that for myself.   I was able to manage all of Dad’s medications.  I could work with the physio to help Dad with exercises to improve his mobility.  I knew lots of strategies for managing pain and living with pain. I used everything I had learned to help Dad make the best of his last days.  I was also able to use many of the skills I had learned in SAGALA.  The best program in the Salvos!  I still had hard days and I still grieved for my Father.  It was hard to watch my hero get confused and frail.  However, I was equipped to make that difficult time easier for Mum and Dad and it was an absolute privilege to serve them in that way.  I thank God for that.

You might be wondering what all this has to do with God’s promises and being joyful.

James 1:2 says “Dear brothers, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.”

When I have had dark days or difficulties, it has been hard to be joyful and reading James during my most difficult times really challenged me.  However, I see in my life where God has used my difficulties to help others.  So, when I hit a rough patch, I cling to God’s promises and ride out the storm, knowing that God has a purpose - even if I can’t see it.

I have to say that this verse in Psalm 145 is not one of the Bible verses that I recite or re-read when I am having a hard time or need to remind myself to get it together and smile. However, it has been ingrained in me that the Word of God is True and I can trust every promise I read in it.  So, this verse is the reason I know all the other verses are true.  I can memorise them, or have them hanging over my bed or keep them in my phone as reminders.

It’s true that I can be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10).  Jeremiah 29:11-13 is true when it says that God has a plan for my life and when I seek him I will find him.  Lamentations 3:23-24 is true when it says that the Lord’s mercies begin afresh each morning (I read this one every morning and claim it over my day).  Romans 8:18 is true when it says that “what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal to us later.” I can be joyful in the valleys because I know this is only temporary. Philippians 4:19 is true when it says that God will meet all my needs and I don’t worry about paying my bills or buying the things I need.  I know that in this world I will have trouble, but I can take heart because Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33).

I want you to know that there are some wonderful things happening in my life.  I have a loving and supportive family.  I have caring Christian friends who encourage me and pray for me.  I have a comfortable place to live with a roommate who makes me laugh everyday (in case you don’t know, I live with my mum). I have a job that pays well and challenges me. I have access to the best medical care in the world.  I have everything I could possibly need.

This verse encourages me to be joyful because it reminds me that I can trust in my Lord and Saviour.  I’m joyful because my joy doesn’t come from the ‘good’ stuff in my life.  I’m joyful because my Joy comes from Jesus!

Checking In

Let's do a quick recap of the goals today.

The Action Plan looks like this...
  • Prioritise my evening routine and sleep pattern.
  • Stop drinking soft drinks.  I gave up ice cream (except for special occasions) last year and I am 3 days into my soft drink fast. I can do this! It's easier to drink 2L of water everyday if you reduce the amount of other fluids you put into your body!  This will also help me to lose a bit of weight.
  • Complete a Bible activity and Pray everyday.
  • Stretch.

Let's talk about each point...

Prioritise my evening routine and sleep pattern

The sleep pattern is definitely at the top of my priority list.  My evening routine still needs a lot of work.  I'm getting there, though and it's heaps better than last year.

Stop drinking soft drinks

I had a lemonade on the holidays. This is the first soft drink I have had in more than 3 months.  I haven't felt any need to have more soft drink since then.  I feel like I have reached this goal. Perhaps it would be better to focus on drinking 2L of water everyday.  This is especially important as we head into the winter months.  When it is cooler, I don't automatically drink lots of water because I'm not as hot. This goal needs tweaking to be more relevant now that I've reached my goal.

Complete a Bible Activity and Pray everyday

My tracking app says day 78.  That means that I have accessed my Bible App 78 days in a row!  My goal is to get up to 90 days in a row and keep going. I'm nearly there! :) I am really feeling a difference in how I feel and my behaviour as a result of the time I spend using the Bible, talking to God and meditating on Him.  This goal is 'reached' but I will continue to track my daily habit so I can keep it up.  Working towards this goal has been so rewarding!

Stretch

I'm doing okay on this goal.  At least for the last two weeks, I have been stretching everyday. This is helping too. I'm finding it hard to stay on track with this goal and to do this as prevention rather than reaction to feeling tight and sore.

That's that then.

February Goal Update

I started tracking my goals on AGT last year and this year I am doing things a little differently.

My overarching goal for 2018...

In 2018 I will be the healthiest and happiest version of myself by making good choices for my body, my soul, my mind and my relationships. I will do my best with what I have and be grateful for abundant blessings.

The plan I put together to achieve that, looked a bit like this...
  • Stretch.

The first six weeks of the year have been busy! Getting back to school - 4 days a week this year instead of 3 days - has been a huge adjustment.  The minister at church moved away and we have a new one.  My grandfather is in hospital.  My nephew is starting University soon. Nephews and Nieces have started high school.  I have to admit that the goals sort of fell off the list of priorities lately, so I haven't done as well as I would have liked, but that's okay. Let's be more specific.

Prioritise my evening routine and sleep pattern:
Apart from a few unusual and unfortunate events (family!) I have managed to get myself into a regular sleep pattern and my evening routine is mostly on track.  I would like to improve it a little, but for now, I'm happy with how it's going.  Sometimes, after work, I have a headache or other aches and pains that make it hard for me to follow my routine to the letter - reading is a bit of a challenge when I have a bad headache!
Shelly's setting a good example for me though!

Stop Drinking Soft Drink:
I am calling this one a win! I haven't had any soft drink since 1 January 2018.  That's 46 days and counting!! Go me!

Complete a Bible activity and Pray everyday:
I'm so close on this one.  I made it to 21 days in a row on my tracking app for this one.  Like I said earlier, I sometimes have trouble reading at night when I have a headache.  I'm using my Scripture Typer App every second day to memorise and revise key Bible verses.  I am mostly keeping up with this, there are just some days when my body just won't cooperate.  I definitely pray everyday!
I am also using a Bible App that has different reading plans (they range in length from 3 days to 90 days).  I have a few plans saved and lined up for my future reading.  :) I'm working toward it.

Stretch:
I need to do this more... like everyday!  Perhaps this one deserves more of my attention this month.

That's it for now. See you next week!
